A man on a mission
On the first Sunday in May since 1999, the city of Cincinnati has hosted the Flying Pig Marathon.
Over the years, the Flying Pig has grown into a weekend-long series of events.
This year there is a one-mile race on Friday followed by a 5K, 10K, children’s 26th mile, Flying Fur pet, and run-event for adults and children with disabilities on Saturday. The weekend is capped off by the full and half Flying Pig Marathon races on Sunday.
Mia and Tim
Recently, I was lucky enough to share the story of Tim Ruge, organizer of PigAbilities, the event designed for participants with disabilities.
Tim’s ongoing mission to grow PigAbilities is personal. The Flying Pig held the first PigAbilities event in 2013.
In 2015, Tim participated in his first PigAbilities with his younger sister, Mia, who has Down syndrome.
Afterward Tim decided he could make it better.
He has since taken it upon himself to recruit more participants and more people to line the streets in support of them in order to make it the best experience possible.
“Our goal this year is to get a thousand people to participate in the event and to have someone cheering them on literally every step of the way, so these participants can have the most phenomenal experience possible”Tim Ruge
