The next big thing
I am almost through The Given Day. One last, long night of reading and I should have it finished. I am a bit afraid of how the story ends. I held off on reading any history of the major event involved in the Boston PD unionization after WWI as to not spoil anything for myself. In terms of the tale I can see the stories of characters breaking for the good or bad, or worse, settling into to the status quo. If you’ve read the book, you know what I mean.
I did a little more homework on The Book Thief before deciding whether to buy it. I think I’ll buy it. The Washington Post review and others make it sound very appealing to read.
Beyond that I sent out inquiries into volunteer opportunities at the local Ronald McDonald House and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I figured doing something good might help stave off an impending funk I feel and redirect my thinking from unhealthy online obsessions with dating, current events and politics. If you didn’t know Twitter and the like is my new bane. I can’t stop looking. I craft my little follow list, watch the battles and cheer when the side I like wins then forget politics is a never-ending war, or at least that’s how it feels now. So,yes, the volunteerism.
Of course this thought makes me doubt my motivation for volunteering. The response I got for Ronald McDonald House today suggested I might be suited for a place that details working two 4 hour shifts twice a month and the group wants a year’s commitment. This would also mean working with families facing difficulties. I think I can handle it. I just don’t want to start and then stop, hating myself for dropping the ball. I figure I will mull it over a bit before finishing the application they sent me, and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters as well.
Tonight I go home and will probably eat some eggs over-easy and a few pancakes while contemplating.
